![]() ![]() Some of the radical groups Bartlett writes about are pretty innocuous, seeking benign utopias. So, what did he say that might help us understand events like the January 6 capital riot and the recently-reported Q Anon murder in Florida? Well, it’s complicated. That’s what has me worried: as scary as some of the radicals he reports on are, the worst may have acted on their utopia after his book was published. ![]() Bartlett embedded himself with eight different radical groups and reported out how they operate and, most importantly, what they each aim to do (the Chasing Utopia part.) Bartlett did not report about Q Anon, the Oath Keepers, or the Proud Boys. I am sure a large part of this worry is related to what has happened in our world since the book was published in 2017. That changed when I read Jamie Bartlett’s Radicals Chasing Utopia (2017.) Bartlett’s reporting about extreme radicals and their plans left me worried about our future. One emotion that I rarely feel upon reading a book is worry. ![]() Some books, maybe the best books, evoke emotional responses. Book Review: Radicals Chasing Utopia by Jamie Bartlett ![]()

In this case Mantel writes the kind of historical fiction which uses actual historical people for all its characters, remains faithful to what is historically documented as having happened while the novelist, like the historian, has a duty to realize the living experience and interpret the significance small and large of each event or character. Tudor matter includes all that happened, all that can be connected to people influenced by and influencing a family tree of Tudors, from the time of the ascension of Henry Tudor (1485-1509) to the English throne (also 1485) to the death of his son, Henry VIII’s third child, Anne Boleyn’s daughter, Elizabeth (born 1533, died 1603). We read and discussed carefully Mantel’s two novels as providing us with a fresh angle on the Tudor Matter. Madrid is perhaps most notable in modern Jewish history as the site of the 1991 peace talks held between Israel, Jordan, Syria, and the Palestinians. Only during the mid-nineteenth century did Jews begin to return to Madrid and establish what is today, along with Barcelona, one of the two largest Jewish communities in Spain. Jewish life in Madrid came to an end in 1492 with the expulsion of Jews from all of Spain. Though once a thriving center of Jewish life, most of Madrid's Jewish population was brutally murdered during the riots of 1391, while many others fled or converted to escape persecution. The history of Madrid Jewry is much like the history of Jews elsewhere in Spain, consisting of periods of great development layered between periods of severe persecution. Located in central Spain, Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain and home to 3,500 Jews. Virtual Jewish World: Table of Contents| Europe| Spain ![]() |
